Registration requirements for PhD Students

ICO distinguishes three categories of PhD students, divided into Full time and Part time PhD Members:

  • Full time PhD Members
    • (1) PhD students who obtained a research master's degree, and
    • (2) PhD students who obtained a regular master's degree,
  • Part time PhD Members (≤0.6FTE for working on your PhD)
    • (3) PhD Students with a part-time appointment or an appointment outside the ICO universities
PhD students with a research master's degree who wish to register in ICO, have to meet the following criteria:
  • The PhD student is employed by one of the ICO universities, and working on his or her research project in a faculty or institute participating in ICO. In case the employment of the PhD student has not yet officially started, but the definitive candidate for the PhD position is known, this candidate is allowed to register based on a request from his or her supervisor.
  • At least one of the supervisors participates as a staff member in ICO. In certain cases a PhD student may be granted admission, while his or her supervisor no (longer) participates in ICO. In that case, the participating university is required to assign a second supervisor to the PhD research project who does participate as a staff member in ICO.
  • The PhD student has at one's disposal a minimum of 2,25 years net ('netto tijd') for doing research. This includes hours for education and supervision.
  • The thesis research has a minimum scope of 3 years, and a maximum duration of 5 years.
