There is a full time academic vacancy in the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences (PPW) of KU Leuven (Belgium), in the field of Learning design. This vacancy is embedded in the research unit Education and Training. The post includes academic teaching, research and services to the community.

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • develop a strong and innovative research program about designing learning environments, including the use of technology in learning environments;
  • develop collaborations with members of the research group Instructional Psychology and Technology, and with staff from the Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences and KU Leuven more generally;
  • acquire research funding and publish in international peer-reviewed journals;
  • supervise PhD students to a high standard.

Teaching responsibilities include:

      •  courses in the field of designing learning environments (including the use of technology), with a clear commitment to the quality of the program as a whole, in the various Dutch and English BA and MSc programs that are offered by the faculty, at both the Leuven and Kortrijk campuses;

      •  supervision of BA and MSc theses and internships.

The candidate is expected to develop his/her teaching in line with the teaching philosophy of KU Leuven based on activating and research-based teaching. The precise teaching assignment will be determined in consultation with colleagues and the coordinator of the research unit, the program directors, the vice dean for education and the dean. The teaching assignment usually includes four course units (max. 20 credits) per academic year.


The candidate is expected to:

  • take on academic responsibilities within the research unit and within the faculty;
  • actively engage in the translation and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of learning design to practice;
  • offer services to educational projects and initiatives at various levels and in different contexts nationally and internationally;
  • participate in national and international networks and policy committees.

Candidates are expected to have a PhD in Educational Sciences, Psychology, or in a related discipline, provided that the candidate has relevant research experience in the field. 

Applicants are expected to have an excellent research track record, as evidenced by publications in international peer-reviewed journals within the domain of learning design. International research experience is appreciated, and if not yet acquired, this is a requirement during the first five years of a tenure track mandate. 

Applicants are expected to have excellent teaching skills and to be prepared to further develop these skills by attending courses organized by the faculty or the university. 

In addition to excellent research and educational skills, the applicant is expected to have good communication and organizational skills as well as (potential) leadership qualities. He/she will also be an excellent team player.

Proficiency in English is required.

The official administrative language used at KU Leuven is Dutch. If you do not speak Dutch (or do not speak it well) at the start of employment, KU Leuven will provide language training to enable you to take part in administrative meetings. Before teaching courses in Dutch or English, you will be given the opportunity to learn Dutch, respectively English, to the required standard.


We are offering a full time employment in a dynamic and internationally oriented research environment. Depending on the candidate’s record and qualifications, he/she will be appointed at one of the academic staff grades.
