Professor Grossman is the Nomellini-Olivier Professor of Education at Stanford University School of Education and is a visiting scholar to ICLON from 6-19 September. On Tuesday September 18, she will give a presentation on University-based preparation for professional practice.

All professional schools, from medical schools to departments of engineering, from seminaries to schools of education, are charged with preparing their students for clinical practice. Yet practice has always had an uneasy relationship, at best, with university education. Universities have been ambivalent about the status and content of the more practical coursework that is part and parcel of most professional programs. We know surprisingly little about the preparation for professional practice that happens in the university context.

We set out to explore how practice is taught in the context of various university-based professional education programs. Three clinical psychology programs, three seminaries, and two teacher education programs were included in the study. . For each institution, site visits were conducted that included interviews with administrators, faculty, and staff; observations of multiple classes and field-work; and focus groups with students who were either at the midpoint or at the end of their programs. Our cross professional comparisons suggest that looking at how different professionals are prepared can increase our “pedagogical imaginations” and stimulate discussions among professional educators about how to learn from each other, as we strive to improve the preparation of novices within our fields.

Admission is free, but registration is required by sending an email to Machteld Reuser (Reuser@iclon.leidenuniv.nl)
