Monday 25 – Wednesday 27 August 2014

Erasmus University Rotterdam, the Netherlands (www.eur.nl)

The deadline for submitting proposals is March 10, 2014. You will be notified of the results of the reviewing process by May 5, 2014. Proposals should be submitted through the conference website: www.eur.nl/earli-sig2.

We would like to invite you to submit proposals for presentation at the EARLI SIG2 meeting 2014 in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The aim of this meeting is to share and exchange ideas about your latest research on learning with text and/or with graphical representations like pictures, diagrams, or animations. The central theme of the meeting is:
“Building bridges: Improving our understanding of learning from text and graphics by making the connection”
The city of Rotterdam is famous for its beautiful bridges that connect the two river banks of De Nieuwe Maas (‘the New Meuse’). This matches well with the research domain of our SIG that focuses on ‘bridging’ verbal and visual representations. Not only do we investigate how learners integrate different representations that are provided in their learning environments, but also how learners connect these external representations to their internal representations. Furthermore, we study how learners build new representations from their existing representations, and how learners connect with each other using interfaces with multiple representational formats. Finally, as an applied field of study, we try to bridge the gap between scientific knowledge and educational practice, by translating our insights into practical instructional design guidelines, but also by looking for inspiration within the field of instructional design.
