Abstract

Which are key characteristics of a competent teacher? This question currently motivates the so-called expert paradigm in educational and psychological research. In the present work-shop we will tackle the following questions . (1) How to theoretically derive significant characteristics of a competent teacher? (2) How to organize these characteristics into a coherent structure? (3) Which methods can be applied to assess these characteristics while taking into account psychometric quality standards (i.e., objectivity, reliability, and validity)? (4) How to construct appropriate assessment instruments (e.g., tests, questionnaires, behavioural samples)? The overarching goal of the workshop is that our participants will take over the role of a researcher who plans to construct a measure of teacher competence. To this end, participants (in small groups of up to four persons) will construct an instrument of a specific (self selected) facet of teacher competence.
